Does my neighbour's insurance cover me?

When watching the news on last Saturday morning, I came across an interesting article on the BBC. Almost 2 MILLION people in the UK do not have any sort of Home Insurance in place! You can watch the report by visiting the BBC News website here.

The lady in the article, Violet Grainger, was amongst one of those 2 million; when her neighbour's chimney caught fire it spread to the thatched roof of her property and Ms Grainger was left nothing.

Sandra1Ms Grainger thought she would be able to recoup her losses via her neighbour's insurers as the fire had spread from their property. Unfortunately for Ms Grainger it was found that there was no negligence on her neighbour's part and therefore they did not have to assist Ms Grainger.

She had lost everything for the sake of saving £300 on her insurance. Had she taken out Insurance on her property she may have been able to recover some of her losses.

Contrary to what some people believe, if you are a property owner your neighbour's insurance may not cover your property in the event of damage being caused by an incident at their property and your Landlord's insurance will not cover your belongings if you are a tenant. That's why it is so important to ensure that you have the correct cover in place.

Getting a quote and setting up an insurance policy takes minutes nowadays and I know I would rather be a couple of hundred pounds out of pocket each year than face the prospect of having nothing should the worst happen!
